Nicholas Pooran grew up in Couva, Trinidad, and attended Naparima College, where he quickly gained a reputation for his natural athleticism and aggressive batting style.

As a left-handed wicketkeeper-batter, his rise through the Trinidad & Tobago system was incredibly fast:

  • Early Start: He made his Under-19 debut in 2012 at only 16 years old.
  • The Breakthrough: At the 2014 ICC Under-19 World Cup, he served as the team’s vice-captain.
  • Record Breaker: He scored 303 runs in that tournament, headlined by a massive 143 against Australia-the highest score of the event.
  • Clutch Performance: During that same match, he anchored a famous 136-run partnership for the ninth wicket.

In January 2015, just as his career was taking off, Nicholas Pooran was in a devastating car accident. He suffered severe fractures to his tibia, ankle, and knee.

After a long road of rehabilitation, he rebuilt his career to become one of the world’s most dangerous T20 players.

  • IPL 2020: Saved a certain six against Rajasthan Royals with a gravity-defying leap—Sachin Tendulkar called it the best save he’d ever seen.
  • MLC 2023 Final: Captained MI New York to the title with a massive 137 off 55 balls, winning Player of the Season.
  • CPL 2013: Debuted at age 17 as the league’s youngest player, instantly hitting 54 off 24 balls.

Nicholas Pooran is a left-handed T20 power-hitter known for elite bat speed and his ability to dominate spin.

Rather than using classical technique, he relies on strong wrists and flat hitting to target the leg-side boundaries.

Typically used as a middle-order accelerator or a death-overs finisher, his primary value lies in his fearless intent and world-class six-hitting, though he remains a very capable wicketkeeper.

  • Exceptional six-hitting power
  • One of the best spin-hitters in T20 cricket
  • Proven match-winner in franchise leagues
  • Performs well under pressure in run chases
  • Inconsistency across long tournaments
  • Vulnerable to high pace early in his innings
  • Limited impact in Test-format cricket
